Hyperbaric Oxygen & Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease Support in Edmonton

TruMed offers Edmonton Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment.

We've amalgamated evidence for HBO in the treatment of Lyme Disease.

This review page is for informational purposes only.

Background:

Lyme disease, is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks.

Borrelia species can infect any tissue or organ system.

Therefore, multiple symptoms from different body systems are observed with patients with Lyme disease.

Ticks and can spread numerous other infections, which cause similar symptoms: Babesia, Bartonella, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia & Mycoplasma.

The common Elisa & Western Blot testing has many pitfalls: many patients with Lyme are seronegative, which means they do not produce antibodies to Borrelia and if they do produce antibodies most conventional reference labs do not test for the full spread of antibodies associated with Lyme disease.

These days our Naturopathic doctors tend to rely on newer "EliSpot" Lyme Disease testing which is suggested to be between 20 and 200 times more sensitive than a conventional ELISA.

Chronic Lyme disease symptoms are often vague and resemble numerous other infectious disease and autoimmune conditions

Chronic Lyme Symptoms:

Fatigue

 Dizziness or vertigo

Memory loss or cognitive impairment

Sleep disturbances

Numbness or tingling of extremities

Rheumatism

Sensory distortion of skin (burning sensations)

Cardiac problems

Light or sound sensitivity

Balance or coordination problems

and many others

The effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen on a bacterial infection are well studied: the body’s response to infection involves an oxygen radical based oxidative burst.

Neutrophil function is enhanced by increasing the tissue oxygen levels and elevated oxygen partial pressure may also directly inhibit function of Borrelia bacteria.

Texas A&M University

In the 1990s, a 6-year Texas A&M University pilot program treated patients with "post treatment Lyme disease" (PTLD) or "post-Lyme disease syndrome" (PLDS).

Subjects underwent up to 40 1 hour Hyperbaric Oxygen sessions at a pressure of 2.36 ATA.

Within 3 days of starting Hyperbaric Oxygen, all subjects developed a "Herxheimer reaction" (suggesting either die-off of the Bacteria or an increased immune response occured or both).

Improvement or resolution of symptoms was observed in 37 of 38 subjects within 3 weeks of completing treatment.

Beneficial effect from Hyperbaric treatment was sustained in approximately 70 % of subjects for up to 6 years.

Improved cognitive abilities and concentration and mood were also seen.

Texas A&M Case Reports

Patient 1: 40 year old female with chronic fatigue, limited walking, constant joint pain, and cognitive difficulties.

Had symptoms for 5 years despite 5 rounds of antibiotic treatment for Lyme.

Patient initially had a severe herxheimer reaction.

Improved walking distance and cognitive function at 2-months after finishing Hyperbaric Treatment.

Many activities of daily living resumed at normal levels 5 months after finishing HBOT

Patients 2: 39 year old female, partial vision loss, left sided sensation alteration, chronic fatigue, joint stiffness, muscle pain and left leg weakness.

Had symptoms for 6 years prior to treatment.

More energy, decreased pain in left foot, and leg weakness resolved after sixth Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment.

Improved with only periodic “down days" 5 months after stopping treatment.

Patient 3: 16 year old female, with fatigue, muscle and joint pain, mood swings, insomnia, memory loss and headaches. Patient was removed from high school.

Had symptoms for 3 years prior.

Long term antibiotic treatments only gave temporary relief.

After 4–5 treatments, concentration time increased from 30 min to 3 hours

Over time improvements continued to improve to point where she did well in college.

Taiwan Case Report

This case report on Hyperbaric Oxygen and Lyme was published Huang et al. (2014)

In April 2003, the then 31-year-old healthy man (who was a frequent hiker) began suffering from intermittent low- and high-grade fever.

From 2004-2007, he developed additional symptoms including: nervous system issues, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system problems.

After two rounds of antibiotics were not successful, the patient commenced HBOT.

30 sessions of Hyperbaric Oxygen at 2.5 ATA for 90 minutes were used.

In the first 10 sessions of HBOT, cognitive issues and insomnia resolved.

In the second 10 sessions of HBOT, numbness and eye twitch resolved.

In the final 10 sessions of HBOT, joint pain resolved.

In all, after 30 sessions of Hyperbaric Oxygen, most of the patient's symptoms resolved.

A case report also exists where a 40 year old female with unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss was treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen and Doxycycline for acute Lyme disease.

Both resolved with 10 HBOT treatments which implies efficacy of HBOT in acute Lyme and hearing loss.

In summary, it appears that Hyperbaric Oxygen at least in some cases eliminates persistent chronic Lyme Disease symptoms in patients who have already undergone (and failed) antibiotic therapy.

Naturopathic Medicine

We thought we'd highlight 3 key IV treatments we're seen helpful: IV Alpha Lipoic Acid, IV Glutathione and IV Phospholipids.

The infecting agents in Lyme cause inflammation through various pathways such as IL-1, IL-6, TNFα and NO, creating free radicals and oxidative stress, which damage cell membranes, mitochondria, and nerves.

IV therapy with Alpha Lipoic Acid and Glutathione can quell part of this inflammation especially in the nervous system.

IV Therapy with Phospholipids, which in Edmonton we use Plaquex as our source, can be helpful for mitochondrial and neuronal restoration.

IV Therapy with Lipoic Acid, Plaquex and Phospholipids are often stacked in a Lyme disease patient for recovery.

Our in-house Lyme Disease testing is usually sent to Armin Labs in Germany, our Naturopaths find EliSpot testing is accurate and cost effective.

Edmonton’s Trusted IV Therapy & Infusion Clinic

Lyme Disease Support in Edmonton

Advanced IV and Oxygen Therapies for Chronic Infection and Fatigue

At TruMed Naturopathic Clinic in Edmonton, our team provides advanced, functional approaches to help patients manage Lyme disease and chronic post-infectious fatigue syndromes.

Lyme disease can persist long after the initial infection, leaving patients with symptoms like chronic fatigue, muscle pain, brain fog, poor sleep, and immune dysfunction.
Our approach focuses on cellular repair, oxygen restoration, and detoxification through IV nutrient therapy, NAD+ IVs, Iron infusions, Myers Cocktails, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)—all under the supervision of experienced naturopathic doctors.

These therapies help replenish nutrients, enhance mitochondrial function, and improve oxygenation—supporting the body’s natural healing mechanisms against chronic inflammation and infection.

IV Therapy for Lyme Disease in Edmonton

Nutrient Repletion and Cellular Detoxification

Lyme disease places enormous metabolic stress on the body, leading to micronutrient depletion, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. IV therapy delivers vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants directly into circulation, bypassing the gut and ensuring rapid absorption and effect.

Our Lyme IV protocols often include:

  • Vitamin C: High-dose antioxidant and immune modulator

  • B-complex vitamins: Restores energy metabolism and nervous system balance

  • Magnesium and calcium: Relieves muscle tension and improves sleep

  • Glutathione: Master antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and aid detoxification

Benefits for Lyme Patients

  • Supports immune modulation

  • Reduces oxidative and inflammatory stress

  • Improves energy, mental clarity, and sleep quality

  • Accelerates recovery after Herxheimer (“die-off”) reactions

IV therapy can be customized for detoxification, immune support, or mitochondrial recovery depending on the patient’s stage of illness.

NAD+ IV Therapy for Lyme Disease

Cellular Energy Restoration and Neurological Recovery

Chronic Lyme often damages mitochondria—the “powerhouses” of cells—leading to debilitating fatigue, brain fog, and cognitive slowing.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme essential for mitochondrial function, DNA repair, and inflammation control.

At TruMed Clinic in Edmonton, our NAD+ IV therapy helps rebuild mitochondrial capacity, reduce neuroinflammation, and restore cognitive performance.

Benefits of NAD+ IVs in Lyme Disease

  • Reboots mitochondrial energy production

  • Supports brain function and mental clarity

  • Enhances detoxification and DNA repair

  • Reduces inflammation and oxidative stress

Our NAD+ IV protocols range from 250–1,000 mg per session, often combined with Vitamin C, Glutathione, or Myers Cocktails for synergistic recovery.
Patients commonly notice improved focus, reduced fatigue, and faster post-exertional recovery over a series of treatments.

Iron Infusions for Lyme Disease

Oxygen Delivery and Recovery from Post-Infectious Anemia

Chronic infections, including Lyme disease, can suppress iron absorption and increase inflammatory cytokines that block iron utilization—leading to low ferritin and fatigue even when hemoglobin appears normal.

At TruMed Naturopathic Clinic, we use IV iron infusions to restore oxygen-carrying capacity and cellular metabolism.

Benefits of IV Iron in Chronic Lyme

  • Replenishes ferritin and hemoglobin

  • Enhances oxygen delivery to tissues and mitochondria

  • Improves stamina and reduces muscle weakness

  • Supports immune and detoxification systems

We primarily administer Monoferric® (ferric derisomaltose) for full repletion in a single session, or Venofer® (iron sucrose) in smaller doses for sensitive patients.
All iron treatments are provided under close clinical supervision in our Edmonton IV therapy facility.

Myers Cocktail IVs for Lyme Disease

Nervous System Support and Anti-Fatigue Formula

The Myers Cocktail IV—a classic blend of B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and trace minerals—is a foundational therapy for patients with chronic Lyme disease.

These nutrients are vital for energy metabolism, neurotransmitter balance, and muscle relaxation, making this IV an ideal tool for recovery and symptom control.

Benefits of Myers IVs in Lyme Disease

  • Reduces fatigue and muscle tension

  • Supports nervous system repair and sleep quality

  • Enhances immune balance

  • Replenishes key nutrients depleted by infection and stress

Our naturopathic doctors often combine Myers Cocktails with Glutathione pushes or Hyperbaric Oxygen sessions for synergistic anti-inflammatory and detox benefits.

Hyperbaric Chambers for Lyme Disease in Edmonton

Oxygen, Healing, and Immune Modulation

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one of the most promising adjunctive treatments for chronic Lyme disease and co-infections.
In HBOT, patients breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, allowing oxygen to dissolve deeply into tissues, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluid.

This oxygen saturation creates an environment that supports healing, reduces inflammation, and may help suppress low-oxygen–tolerant bacteria such as Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease.

How HBOT Supports Lyme Recovery

  • Increases oxygenation to hypoxic tissues

  • Enhances immune cell function and antimicrobial defense

  • Reduces neuroinflammation and brain fog

  • Accelerates detoxification and tissue repair

  • Promotes mitochondrial and nervous system recovery

At TruMed Clinic in Edmonton, our hyperbaric chambers are frequently used alongside IV therapy to enhance treatment response.

Synergy: IV Therapy + Hyperbaric Oxygen

  • NAD+ + HBOT: Boosts mitochondrial recovery and cognitive clarity

  • Iron + HBOT: Enhances oxygen delivery and utilization

  • Myers Cocktail + HBOT: Improves immune balance and antioxidant protection

Most Lyme recovery protocols combine 2–4 HBOT sessions per week for 4–8 weeks with complementary IV treatments for maximum benefit.
